Pit Shelter: This type of shelter is easy to build in snow or sand. First dig a pit in the snow or sand. Then cover the surface of the pit with branches, a blanket or tarp. The ground temperature will be more moderate than the air temperature; so this pit will keep you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Be aware that pit shelters could collapse and kill you.

Bomb shelter: Some preppers spend large sums of money to build elaborate bomb shelters with blast proof doors. These underground shelters are excellent for protecting preppers from most emergencies. They can be stocked with ample food and comforting amenities. However, the greatest weakness of these kind of shelters is that most preppers fail to consider what would happen if they got blocked in. What would happen if a group of marauders decided to dump 1 or 2 tons of dirt in front of the door? Could the door still be opened from the inside? And if the door can’t open, then how do the preppers get out? To avoid this problem, the shelter should be built and maintained under great secrecy. Another consideration is the psychology of being enclosed in such a space for a long duration. Some preppers may experience claustrophobia or become psychotic. To help mitigate these types of problems, consider painting the inside of your shelter with outdoor scenes.
